Two ANC members shot dead in KwaMashu

It has emerged that two people who were shot dead at the notorious KwaMashu Hostel, north of Durban, were African National Congress (ANC) members.

A hostel block chairperson for the party, Mphoqo Biyela and another member were gunned down in the hostel area in separate incidents on Sunday night.

A woman was also wounded.

Police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says they are investigating two counts of murder and one of attempted murder.

“The first incident happened about 21:10 when a man was shot and killed at the hostel. The motive for the shooting is still unknown and police are still investigating. Second incident in the same hostel, a man was shot and killed and his girlfriend was wounded. The motive for this shooting is also unknown and police are still investigating,” says Zwane.

Meanwhile Police are investigating a case of public violence after two cars belonging to National Freedom Party (NFP) members at Umzumbe on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast were burnt to ashes.

According to reports, the NFP members were campaigning for elections when their cars were set alight in ward 11.

NFP leader Zanele KaMagwaza-Msibi has since called for urgent talks with the ANC to calm the situation.

Zwane says no arrests have been made at this stage.

“It is alleged that the two groups were fighting and the motive for the fighting is unknown at this stage. Two vehicles were set alight and no arrests have been made at this stage. We are appealing to members of the public to conduct themselves in an orderly manner,” adds Zwane.
