New Deputy Finance Minister Ashor Sarupen has vowed to keep a closer eye on the National Treasury, to ensure that corruption is stopped in its tracks.

Sarupen, from the Democratic Alliance (DA), is part of 76 members of the newly appointed National Executive sworn in yesterday.

At 36 years old, he is also one of the youngest members of the National Assembly.

Sarupen shared his thoughts with SABC News on some of the biggest challenges within the Treasury.

He says, “The biggest challenge is that while Treasury is well run, the other departments get the money from Treasury and misspend it. So it’s about getting the right procedures in place to ensure expenditure and slow spending doesn’t happen and the money doesn’t get siphoned off in projects. We know there is systemic corruption in the state.”
