The South African Police Union (Sapu) has called on the newly appointed Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, to take a stern stance against police killings.

Sapu spokesperson Jabu Mabena urged Mchunu not to interfere with the operational activities of the police, as that is the responsibility of the National Police Commissioner.

He asked for the police service legislation to be amended to deal decisively with police killings.

Mabena further called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to declare police killings as treason.

He says, “Issue number one is the killings of police officials. Throughout these years, we have seen government administrations coming in and out. This is the seventh one, so we are calling on the Minister to focus on changing the legislations that will make sure that justice is done. We want laws that will set an example for others to stop the killings because today the perpetrators are arrested only to be released again on bail.”
