The Sri Lankans who chose to bat on an uncharacteristic T20 surface could only score 77 before they were all out in the final over.
Only three batsmen managed to reach double figures with a highest score of 19.
The South Africans chased down the target off 16 overs and two deliveries for the loss of just four wickets.
Fast bowler, Anrich Nortje, was named man of the match for figures of four for seven in four hostile overs.
The Proteas next play the Netherlands on Saturday, also in New York.
