KZN premier urges political unity post-elections

Reading Time: 2 minutes

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube has called on political parties to prioritise residents’ interests as they make important decisions following the elections.

Speaking in Durban after the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) announced the provincial election results, Dube-Ncube emphasised the need for collaboration.

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) won in KwaZulu-Natal but lacks an outright majority. It is followed by the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the African National Congress (ANC).

Dube-Ncube says, “Beyond the vibrancy of political campaigning, we need to set aside our political differences and work together to continue creating a province of our dreams. After the day of elections and after we’ve finished voting, there is going to be life and that life has now begun.”

Meanwhile, several provinces will need to discuss coalitions over the next fortnight. The ANC has a majority in the North West, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Free State and Eastern Cape. The Democratic Alliance (DA) retains control in the Western Cape.

In KwaZulu-Natal, MK won 37 seats and would need 5 more seats from a coalition to gain control. In the Northern Cape, the ANC won 15 seats, resulting in a hung legislature as the other parties collectively also have 15 seats. In Gauteng, forming coalitions will be challenging with the ANC holding 28 seats, the DA 22, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) 11, and MK 8.

The total number of seats in the legislature is 80.
