The Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) is currently investigating the cause of a fire that occurred at the M1 road on Wednesday, which resulted in power outages.

Surrounding areas such as Parktown West, Braamfontein and Newtown were affected, with no injuries reported.

It is suspected that the disruption was caused while a service provider was undertaking works beneath the M1 bridge following the extensive May 2024 fire on site.

The City of Johannesburg says that the Emergency Management Services (EMS) has declared the area safe following a carbon assessment after the fire at the M1 was successfully distinguished.

Spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane says they are working around the clock to restore power.

“The City of Johannesburg wants to assure residents who are affected by the power outage last night following the fire that occurred on the M1 bridge that it is working around the clock to ensure swift restoration of power in all affected areas. We are urging our residents to be patient.”

“Technicians from City Power, JRA and service providers moved swiftly to do the assessment and assess the cause of the damage so that we can speedily restore services and do necessary repairs,” adds Modingoane.

City Power says it needs approximately 120m of cable to be replaced with the hope of restoring power timeously.
