The City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) has urged residents to exercise caution whilst using heating devices to keep warm during the cold front, to avoid fire incidents.

This comes after the South African Weather Services warned of an expected cold snap that may bring heavy rains and strong winds over parts of Gauteng this afternoon until tomorrow.

Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says emergency services are on high alert.

Mulaudzi says, “We have activated our Disaster Management Monitoring teams in all seven regions of the City of Johannesburg and all our 29 Fire Stations are fully operational and on high alert to respond to any emergencies which might occur.”

Tshwane

The City of Tshwane’s EMS services have asked residents to remain alert for possible severe thunderstorms.

Tshwane EMS spokesperson Charles Mabaso says, “The following safety precautions, if there is any fire danger exposure to dwellings like shacks or houses, burning charcoal gives of deadly amounts of carbon monoxide, so do not leave it in the house when sleeping.”

“Improper use of space heaters, braziers and electric, gas and paraffin heaters, among others should be avoided. The above safety tips are not exhaustive and residents are encouraged to do everything they possibly can to stay safe. ”
