‘IEC should not be deterred from releasing results’

The Director of the School of Public Leadership at Stellenbosch University, Prof. Zwelinzima Ndevu, says the Electoral Commission (IEC) should not be deterred from releasing results by political party threats.

This follows a threatening statement to the IEC by former president and uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party leader Jacob Zuma.

The commission has maintained that it will announce the 2024 national and provincial election results this evening, as initially planned.

This announcement came shortly after Zuma, threatened that announcing the results would be a provocation, as the party refuses to accept the final outcomes.

Ndevu says, “I think that statement from Zuma was unfortunate because it’s a very threatening statement. It is not something that we want to hear from a leader of a party that has received over two million votes from South Africans who have shown confidence in that party.”

“But I think the IEC must not be threatened by that group because if they exceed to the demands of this group… Elections are contested and therefore not all participants will come out happy,” he adds.
