With 14% of the votes counted in the Western Cape, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is predicting that the Democratic Alliance will win the majority of the vote in the province.

The DA has won 85 000 of the 142 000 votes counted so far, or slightly less than 60%. That is very similar to the number of votes that the party received in the 2014 elections.

South Africa on Wednesday voted for the sixth time to elect representatives for the national and provincial governments. At 03:30, half a million votes have been counted. 6500 votes were spoilt and about 63% of registered voters turn up at the voting booth.

Earlier the CSIR predicted that the ANC would receive more votes than any other party in the Northern Cape, but that they would win fever  votes than in the 2014 elections.
