City Power urges residents to conserve electricity amid cold weather

Reading Time: 2 minutes

City Power has appealed to Johannesburg residents to reduce their electricity usage due to the current cold weather conditions.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of cold weather that may bring heavy rains and strong winds, today and tomorrow.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena urged residents to use electricity sparingly to avoid severe strain on the energy network.

Mangena says, “We are currently experiencing high call volumes from customers across our areas of supply. Though we have our systems and resources in place to deal with eventualities, we need customers to also assist in ensuring that the network remains operating at its optimal level. The network overload may cause the electricity equipment to fail, resulting in prolonged outages.”

Meanwhile, the City of Tshwane’s emergency services has asked residents to remain alert for possible severe thunderstorms.

Tshwane EMS spokesperson Charles Mabaso says, “If there is any fire danger exposure to dwellings, like shacks or houses, burning charcoal gives off deadly amounts of carbon monoxide, so do not leave it in the house when sleeping. Improper use of space heaters (izimbawula, braziers, and electric, gas, and paraffin heaters, among others) should be avoided. These safety tips are not exhaustive, and residents are encouraged to do everything they possibly can to stay safe.”
