The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for a cold front expected to hit the western and central parts of the country on Sunday.

In a statement, the SAWS says the cold front will move to the eastern parts on Monday.

The Weather Service says the southern and western high ground will experience disruptive snowfall, damaging winds over the interior and coastline, high seas along the coastal areas and very cold conditions over a significant part of the country.

It adds that heavy rainfall is also expected over the western parts of the Western Cape, where flooding is likely.

Staying in the Western Cape, the Disaster Management Risk Centre for the City of Cape Town has urged the public to stay clear of high risk areas like steep slopes, river banks and areas prone to flooding.

Spokesperson Charlotte Powell says residents, especially those living adjacent to mountains, should install barriers or sandbags to protect their properties from potential mudslides.

“During this time we also want to alert the public to please check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours. And to ensure that they have measures in place for any potential weather impacts.”

City authorities say three people have been injured following strong winds that resulted in damage to roofs in a number of areas.

Powell says it is estimated that 800 hundred structures have been affected and have damaged roofs after heavy rains and strong winds. She says assessments are continuing in affected areas including Khayelitsha. In Kalk Bay there have been two incidents of mudslides.

The Weather Service has issued a level 6 warning for disruptive rainfall for Sunday and damaging winds.
