Gouws’ utterances against what we stand for: DA

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has sought to clarify their decision to suspend their newly sworn-in Member of Parliament, Renaldo Gouws.

This comes as the Human Rights Commission filed papers at the Equality Court regarding the alleged racial slurs made by Gouws in a 2010 video that has been circulating online.

The DA says it has established that the video is genuine and not a fake as had initially been suspected.

The DA’s Director of Communications Richard Newton says the video that they saw for the first time on Wednesday is totally against everything that they stand for.

“A question was posed to him and he indicated that this video had been altered in some way. But of course, as soon as we found out that that was not the case, immediate action was taken. And now there is a process that will follow, the disciplinary process and everything will flow from there. You know, we are getting a lot of questions whether he will still be an MP or other issues involved but he is now being totally prevented from doing any political party events, anything for or in the name of the party. The Federal Legal Commission process is about to start.”
