KZN joins Gauteng as high-risk CIT province

The Cash and Transit Association of South Africa (CTA) has reported a rise in cash-in-transit heists (CIT) in KwaZulu-Natal, which now ranks alongside Gauteng as a high-risk province for such crimes.

Earlier this week, two suspects in a cash-in-transit heist were killed in a shootout with police in Phoenix, north of Durban.

CTA head Grant Clark says the association is working closely with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to dismantle these syndicates. Clark noted a 30% decrease in incidents from last year to this year.

He says,  “The collaborative effort, you know, between industry, the law enforcement agencies, your National Prosecuting Authority has improved greatly as well. We’ve seen some great sanctions coming through on CIT perpetrators in the Canadian region where they’ve got hefty sentences. All that helps. I think, you know, by holding hands working together, I think there’s a system and we’ve got to keep on doing it and hammering away at this issue that we have in South Africa with CITs.”
