Residents of Old Lapland in Kariega in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro in the Eastern Cape have been evacuated from their homes as a precautionary measure.

The evacuations were made last night amid fears that the willow dam might flood and submerge the area.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality spokesperson Sithembiso Soyaya says their fears did not materialise.

Soyaya says the restoration of power to the Kariega and surrounding rural areas is challenging due to damage to infrastructure.

More rain is expected today and tomorrow.

More than 1 200 people from the metro have been move to community halls.
