Mpumalanga has recorded a more than 7% voter turnout decline in the 2024 National and Provincial elections when compared to the 2019 National and Provincial elections.

The Electoral Commission (IEC) says Mpumalanga data shows about 58% of the over two-million-and-23 thousand people who were on the province’s voters roll, came out to cast their votes.

Provincial electoral officer Gugu Langa says a number of incidents experienced in this year’s elections, came from the Bushbuckridge area.

“I am now calling team Bushbuckridge, the celebrities of IEC because every election there are incidents in Bushbuckridge. 2021 we escorted them to count here in Mbombela. 2024 we escorted them to count here. We were forced to escort because members did not want the disputed ballot boxes to be counted,” says Langa.

Mpumalanga residents shared some of their views on the elections.

“I don’t understand why people still vote ANC when ANC can’t deliver. After 30 years they still can’t deliver. I am glad MK and DA are still up there a bit.”

Another resident adds, “I am happy because the ANC has won but the thing is their votes are low. I think it is a wake up call for them to fix their mistakes. I don’t think lot of people did not vote for them because they don’t like the party, but is because they want them to fix their mistakes.”
