Grosvenor Girls’ High School Principal Linda Jorgenson has been placed on precautionary suspension.

This after an independent panel started its investigation into allegations of racism and financial irregularities at the Durban school.

The panel recommended the suspension, saying it was necessary in order to facilitate an investigation in which people can freely and voluntarily give evidence.

The Department of Education says learners will be issued with letters informing parents of the process to be undertaken and a request for them to allow learners who wish to testify, to do so.

Black learners at the school embarked on a strike at the school just over a week ago, alleging that they are being called black monkeys and other derogatory names by staff members.

They say they are not allowed to wear  their hair in its natural form although it is not expressly forbidden in the school rules.

The department of education says it views the racism allegations in a serious light:

Earlier in March, KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC, Kwazi Mshengu met with the school’s management and the school governing body about the allegations.
