48 parties are contesting 400 seats in the Nation Assembly in the 2019 National election. This is the most number of parties contesting a national election in the history of democratic South Africa.
In the 27 April 1994 election – 27 political parties participated – and 7 won seats.
On 02 June 1999 – 13 parties won seats in the National Assembly.
On 14 April 2004 – 12 parties won representation in the National Assembly.
On 22 April 2009 – 13 parties won seats in the National Assembly.
On 7 May 2014 – 13 parties won seats in the National Assembly.
