Two separate accidents in the Eastern Cape have claimed the lives of seven people in Mthatha and East London. Provincial Transport Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose says in the first accident, a taxi with six occupants from Qokolweni direction collided with a bakkie with seven occupants from Mthatha to Hlabatshana location.

Two people died and 10 were injured including three children. In the second incident five people died and 15 injured when a driver of a minibus allegedly lost control of the vehicle on the N2 road in East London.

Binqose says in both incidents the cause of the accidents is unclear but police are investigating cases of culpable homicide.

“Both accidents involve mini bus taxis and the worst of those happened in East London where a minibus taxi lost control overturned and five people died on the scene. While in another accident a minibus taxi collided with a bakkie and two people died in that accident. We are calling on road users to be vigilant at all times and help us avoid avoidable accidents like the ones we witnessed.”
